The area and the perimeter are two very important concepts. Sometimes people confuse the terms ‘Area’ with ‘Perimeter’. They are completely different. The area of a two-dimensional shape is defined as the amount of space that the shape occupies.

Area Perimeter
The amount of space that the shape occupies. The outline of a flat object.
The area of the figure is equal to the total number of squares that are enclosed in that figure. Can be calculated by adding up the length of all the sides, or by measuring the outer boundary of the circle or of an object.

Difference Between Area and Perimeter

By defining the perimeter of an object, you can define the outline of a flat object. What is the difference between measuring area and measuring perimeter? There is a possibility that two shapes with the same areas, with the same perimeter, may have different values for the perimeter.

Area is defined as the amount of space that can be occupied by a shape, a physical object, or a flat surface. The area that is measured by the total of square units that fit into a rectangle, a square object, or a flat surface, is defined. When we have a square grid paper, the concept of finding an area can be understood.

The area of the figure is equal to the total number of squares that are enclosed in that figure. As an example, the blue square occupies 9 square units. That means that the area of the square is 9 square units.

In the real world, we always use the concept of area to find out how much space needs to be painted on a wall, how big are the rooms, how much space is needed on the floor of a room for a tile floor, how much space in the backyard to have a lawn,

The word ‘perimeter’ comes from the Greek word ‘perimetron’. Peri means ‘around’, and megatron means ‘measure’. The diameter of a circle can be calculated by adding up the length of all the sides, or by measuring the outer boundary of the circle or of an object.

The perimeter that we are using is for determining what size photo frames and length of lawn for which we should put a fence. To find the perimeters of small objects, you must use a string or thread to tie around the object whose perimeter you want to find.

If there are polygons, the perimeter of each one is determined by adding up the sides of each polygon and expressing it in the given units.

We measure in linear units what a perimeter is, and we measure in square units what an area is. So, if a rectangle has a long and a wide of 6 units, and its perimeter is 20 units, and the area of the rectangle is 24 square units.

In Conclusion

Area is a measurement that is related to the space occupied by a shape. We can measure the area of the figure by calculating the total amount of square units that are enclosed in that figure. The area of the figure is equal to the total number of squares that are enclosed in that figure.

Meanwhile, perimeter is a measurement that is related to the length of a shape. We can measure the perimeter of an object by adding up the sides of that object and expressing it in linear units. The perimeter of an object is defined as the length of all sides or edges that are located around that object.
